Winterborne Kingston – a short circular route

Dorset, 22nd March 2022.

This circular walk of 2.5 miles through arable farmland starts and finishes at the church of St Nicholas in the village of Winterborne Kingston which lies a few miles to the north east of Bere Regis. It’s an easy walk which can be extended as there many footpaths providing longer routes without encountering any roads.

Walk Description

I parked the car by the Church and walked through the village before soon joining a footpath which cut across a stony field up a gentle rise and leading towards a coppice of trees. The ground was firm and the path well trodden. At no point on this walk was route finding an issue. The only thing I had to watch out for were several large tractors spreading muck across the fields.

Approaching Hill Barn

I soon reached the coppice and then followed the path through another field with a cluster of farm buildings (Hill Barn) ahead of me. I don’t know why, but the combination of these buildings, a few trees, a track lined by hedgerow and the countryside stretching out before me really appeals to me.

A rural scene which really appeals to me….

At the junction with the bridleway I turned right and another barn came into view. Had I turned left and headed north the walk could be extended to make a longer circular route but that’s for another day.

Returning to the village

The farm track soon reaches another ‘t’ junction, I turned right and walked along the path which runs alongside the field edge (with muck spreading still going on!). The village rooftops came into view and the church marks the end of the route.

Despite its short length this is a rather pleasant walk made all the more enjoyable by the sunshine and almost complete absence of any clouds in the sky.

Final thoughts

A month has passed since my last entry. A particularly frustrating time from my point of view but having injured my back last month the prospect of any long walks would have been against the advice of my physiotherapist. I have therefore restricted myself to short familiar walks on even ground without hills but now my back is recovering I can think about planning some new longer walks. The weather is improving, the days are getting longer….. and best of all Spring is here.
